by serving drinks although I wasn’ t allowed to pour alcohol.
In 2010, I started working at one of the biggest clubs on the Island as a simple runner. After the 2nd month, one of the bartenders was unable to work and the boss asked me if I could stand behind the bar to help out. I remained behind the bar and improved myself over time. I eventually became one of the most popular bartenders at the club. I guess I have a unique style of serving and people enjoy seeing me working behind the bar. After a few years, I started work at one of the best restaurants on the Island where I got a glimpse of the culinary world. It was during my time at this restaurant that I knew conclusively that bartending is want I wanted to do.
I then went to the Netherlands to attend the Bols Bartending Academy where I studied international bartending; advanced bartending and mixology. I passed all my exams with almost 100 % score! Upon my return to Curaçao, I started my own business doing private events and workshops on cocktails and service. This year I started a concept:“ cocktails to go.” Now people can buy their favorite cocktails, to go.
Creating cocktails allow you to bring your creativity to life, and seeing people enjoying what you’ ve made is a huge satisfaction and gives you energy to keep going.
What I love most about bartending is that you can create an awesome network and get to know a lot of people- as a bartender you make many friends! There are travel opportunities and you get to work with big brands in the industry. We live on a small island so people recognize you everywhere you go, which is fun. Sometimes when I go to the bank, for instance, I don’ t even have to stand in line anymore!
Next year I get the chance to represent Curaçao at the“ Taste of the Caribbean” in Miami. This is a Caribbean competition for chefs and bartenders from throughout the Caribbean. Last year, I won the best cocktail of the night at the opening event. This was a big achievement. Competing against 14 other Caribbean islands and winning is incredible! My dream is to reach the finals of the biggest world-class bartending competition, and win it. That would be a lifetime dream come true. I’ m sure I’ ll make it one day.
Many times I’ m asked what is my favourite cocktail. Well, I love Daiquiri with an nice aged dark or spiced rum. I’ m also a big fan of an Old Fashioned.
When you’ re in Curaçao, you can find me at Jadore Restaurant. It’ s a beautiful, high-end cocktailbar / restaurant in the middle of the city.
