Statia Day
November 16, 2019
On this day in 1776, an 11-gun salute from Fort Oranje and a salute to the US
flag as the new US navy approached their harbour, made St. Eustatius the first
foreign country to recognize the newly independent United States of America.
This day is also recognized as Statia Day, a national holiday used to recognize
and celebrate the island’s culture and heritage.
One week prior to November 16th each year, Statia Day celebrations begin.
Cultural, culinary, musical, sporting, family and community events all precede
this auspicious day which is marked by an official ceremony and parade.
Celebrations continue until the end of the day on November 16th.
