Harry Luke Johnson Museum

Third Encounter
A cluster of pinnacles forming an underwater mountain rises 90 feet from the Saba sea floor. A 15
minute boat ride will take you to this picturesque sight, located about a mile off the island’s west
coast. Schools of fish, sponges, corals, fans and other colourful and diverse marine life exists in
this area which is a delight for divers who come from the world over to get close to this impressive
one-of-a-kind formation.
Harry Luke Johnson (1914-1972) was an amateur artist, very interested in preserving Saba’s
heritage. He began Saba’s first museum in 1970. After his death in 1972, the government
expanded the museum after having bought the original Saban cottage built in 1840 where
sea Captain Josiah Peterson had lived in Windwardside. It stands in the middle of a beautiful
romantic garden. The house conforms to classic Saban cottage architecture by being in two
parts, each with a separate roof. The larger portion is made up of the master bedroom, the
sitting room, and a smaller bedroom and is covered by a hip roof. The double front door
opens immediately into the sitting room, directly opposite another double door leading to
the meadow at the back of the house.
