Salt Cay

In the south east of the Turks and Caicos
you’ll find the small 7 sq. km island of Salt
Cay. With a population of not more than
120, most of the Cay consists of marine
ponds and tropical brushland. The primary
settlement on Salt Cay is Balfour Town,
where the main port of Deane’s Dock is
located. Salt production took place here
for 250 years and was the mainstay of the
economy during that time. The majority
of Salt Cay’s 120 residents live in North and
South District, the two residential areas on
the island.
Salt Cay is quiet with no paved roads.
You won’t find many motor vehicles here
but you will see lots of wild donkeys. You
will also see remnants of the salt industry
throughout the island. Recently designated
a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the only
such site in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Whale watching and diving are the two
activities that attract visitors to this area.
