Events OCTOBER 12 La Raza Day A celebration of the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492 NOVEMBER Festival of Puerto Rican Music This is an annual festival of the country’s traditional music such as Plena which originated in the city of Ponce and Bomba, a musical mixture of African, Spanish and Taino cultures. NOVEMBER 19 Puerto Rico Discovery Day Celebrated island-wide, this day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1943 when it is said on his second voyage, he came ashore at the north western municipality of Aguadilla in Puerto Rico. NOVEMBER 19 Jayuya Indian Festival The town of Jayuya celebrates the culture and traditions of the island’s original inhabitants, the Taino Indians, their music, food and games. Over 100 artisans exhibit and sell their products. DECEMBER Las Mañanitas A religious procession honouring the city’s patron saint, Our Lady of Guadaloupe. © Puerto Rico Tourism Company
