There are two theories on how this island got its name . One theory suggests the name derives from the first Dutch settlers on the island who were called Koop . The second says it ’ s from the coopers who collected white cedar from the island which was used to make barrels to house their rum . Today , the island is a favourite for day trips and it is also quite popular with yachties . It has now re-opened after 2017 ’ s Hurricane Irma , complete with its hotels , restaurants and the largest rum bar around . Its waters also present great snorkeling opportunities .
