Gombeys of Bermuda
The word Gombey is derived from an African word meaning rhythm and this word is
has a long tradition on the island. Originally Gombey dancers would only dress up and
perform on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, the only 2 days slaves would traditionally be
given off. Today however, due to their popularity with both locals and tourists, Gombey
dancers now perform weekly at various places on the island.
