. . . I love the mixture we have in Cuba, for sure we have beautiful beaches, but what I love the most is to walk around the city and discover new places and buildings. I’m an architecture fan and Havana city is full of buildings with different architectural styles, colors and sizes. You can read the history of the country by its building and it is also an expression of the Cuban people’s idiosyncrasies. You can find small castles built at the beginning of the 20th century in the middle of a residential neighborhood, showing the upper middle class delusion of grandeur during that period, but also small houses painted with lots of colors and the most baroque décor inside. Cuban people historically laugh at their sorrows. This is reflected in our buildings, sometimes forgotten by time but still standing, with a tree growing up within it and becoming part of its walls, but the building still stands. Cuban people are like that. If life gave us lemons, we don’t just make lemonade, we take it one step further and we make Mojito (a traditional Cuban cocktail made with lemon, rum and mint leaves). ” ~ Mariam González, Founder and CEO Photo by Julio Alvite Piedra
