Barton Creek
Cave
This cave system, located near the
town of San Ignacio in the west of the
country, is one of the longest cave
systems in Belize. As well as being
an important tourist destination
for visitors wanting to experience
some of the 8kms of caves, it is also
an important archaeological site.
Utensils and human remains found in
the cave system indicate that it was
used for many purposes by the Maya
from as early as 200AD and was in
continuous use by them until 900AD.
