BUCK ISLAND REEF NATIONAL MONUMENT, ST. CROIX
1.5 miles off the coast of St. Croix to the northeast and surrounded by sea gardens, the beautiful
Buck Island is small, uninhabited and one of the most visited of all the islands. The island’s reef
became protected in 1961 when the then President of the United States, President John F. Kennedy,
named it as the first U.S. underwater national monument. You can swim or snorkel and because the
island also has picnic sites complete with grills, beaches and a hiking trail, it is a lovely place to just
hang out.
