Carriacou
For those who have visited the small island of
Carriacou, its pristine, untouched beauty makes it
an appealing place for repeat visits. Small, with a
population of a little over 6,000, a visitor will soon
realize that living here can be akin to paradise.
People live simple lives on this small island, where
everyone knows everyone. If you hang around
long enough, passers-by will also be greeting
you by name. Children on their way to or from
school will wave enthusiastically and ply you with
pleasant greetings. Adults will smile and say hello.
The island-mood is generally un-hurried as people
go about their daily tasks. Be it tending to their
animals, gardening, fishing, selling in their village
shops or otherwise, it is all done with an air of
relaxation. People pause on their journey to chat,
and as you wander through the villages, on foot
or by car, you will most likely encounter groups
of people just “liming”. You may find young men
tending to a campfire on which sits a pot of fish
broth and ground provisions. It is fun, they say, to
hang out, cook, drink and socialize.
How could you not love this place? Added to the
calmness permeating through the island, you have
the beaches. Quiet, secluded, all to yourself. You
can enjoy the sunshine and swim at your leisure,
uninterrupted. So, when you’re in the southern
Caribbean, head over to Carriacou on a day trip.
You’ll enjoy it!
