Colon Cemetery
Quietly and peacefully, history and architecture combines to present a fascinating visit at the Colon Cemetery. Since its construction was completed in 1886, over 800,000 graves, including the grave of the Spanish architect who designed and supervised its construction, Calixto Arellano de Loira y Cardoso, lies within its 140 acres. Elaborate tombs, marble sculptures, ornate crypts, family vaults and monuments honouring firefighters and baseball greats in varying styles- renaissance to neoclassical to art deco, adds to its fascination. Many graves tell its own story so it is easy to wander throughout the cemetery, with or without a guide.
