PLACES OF INTEREST in the British Virgin Islands

Sage Mountain National
Park, Tortola
Donated to the BVI government by Laurance
Rockefeller in 1964, the Sage Mountain National
Park consists of 86 acres along a ridge running
east to west across the island. Most of the park
is more than 305 meters above sea level with its
highest point being Mount Sage at 523 meters.
Although not strictly a rainforest, visitors can
still see hanging vines, manikara trees, ferns,
mahogany and cedar as well as birds such as
hummingbirds, kestrels and martins.

Soper’s Hole, Tortola
Reputed to be a former pirate’s den, Soper’s
Hole is also the place where the first Dutch
settlers made landfall. Today it is a popular
entry point to the BVI for yachts and a busy
ferry terminal due to its sheltered but deep
waters. A bridge connects Soper’s Hole to
Frenchman’s Cay and the marina where
interesting shops and restaurants, housed in
West Indian-style buildings, can be found.
