Rendezvous Bay © David Mac Gillivary Montserrat Tourist Board PLACES TO EXPLORE SOUFRIERE HILLS VOLCANO JACK BOY HILL VIEWING FACILITY THE HERBAL GARDEN MONTSERRAT VOLCANO OBSERVATORY Jack Boy Hill Viewing Facility is strategically positioned to view the volcano, the abandoned airport and Eastern villages which were destroyed by the volcano. The Facility includes a viewing platform, concession area, picnic areas with seating, toilet facilities, a telescope to zoom in on the volcano, a mini-trail and barbecue grills. Perfect for a picnic. The Soufriere Hills Volcano is a composite volcano characterized by andesite dome-building eruptions. Its last major eruption prior to the one in 1995 is thought to have occured about 400 years ago. Since 1995, eruptions continues to the present day - there have been five distinct periods of lava extrusion and dome growth and five distinct pauses. Montserrat Volcano Observatory is the organization responsible for the scientific monitoring of the Soufriere Hills Volcano. Visitors are welcome to visit from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm. While there, be sure to take in the excellent view of the Soufriere Hills Volcano. A film about the eruption is shown every hour. The Herbal Garden is located at the National Trust in Salem. Take a guided tour with local herbal medicine expert Mapeye. Here you’ll find a wide variety of Herbs used for medicinal purposes such as energy bush, horse radish, aloe, lemon grass, peppermint, rosemary, cat mint, black mint, elderly berry and much more.
