This is the site where it is believed the famous crystal skull, carved from an 8” cube of rock crystal was found. With no mortar to bind them, the structures at this Maya site, the largest in southern Belize, are all made from limestone blocks. Thought to have been an 800AD classic ceremonial center, the modern Maya named this site Lubaantun, meaning "place of the fallen rocks" due to the ground subsiding and some of the un-mortared blocks having tumbled out of position.
