By Icelandic Hurricane at the English language Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 3.0, Fort Charles The largest of several forts on the island, Fort Charles was built in 1630 to protect Charleston’s harbour. The island’s sugar trade was worth more than all of the other British interests in the North American colonies combined, so many forts were built on the island to ensure protection was adequate. In 1854 all the forts were abandoned and now fort Charles lies in ruins with only a few of the original 24 cannons remaining in place.
