Born and humbly raised in the remote parish of St. Paul’s, St. Kitts, even as a young boy, Llewellyn had an entrepreneurial, resilient spirit. From the north of the island, he would hop onto a fishing boat and head down to the salt ponds on the southern peninsula, where he would collect salt which he sold to purchase shoes for school. His story continues: 22 years later, the renowned Four Seasons Hotel was being constructed on Pinney’s Beach, Nevis. At that time, no restaurants or bars adorned the pristine coastline. Then, Llewellyn “Sunshine” Caines arrived from St. Kitts with 40 Eastern Caribbean dollars ($15 US dollars) in his pocket and saw an opportunity! He got a steel drum, purchased some charcoal, and set up his roughly-made BBQ grill on the beach.
