Celebrations
The island is perhaps famous for its Irish
Carib inhabitants as Irish have settled here
since the 1600’s. This of course means that
the island hosts St. Patrick’s Day with more
raucous Irish celebrations than anywhere
else in the Caribbean.

Diving Between
MORE HISTORY: The slaves in Montserrat planned an uprising for 17th March, 1768, in an
attempt to grasp freedom from the bonds of their slave masters. The plot was discovered, and
the ‘ringleaders’ cruelly punished. St Patricks Week of Activities remembers their sacrifice, and
the heritage which has been passed down from generation to generation through the ages, and
which makes Montserrat and its people unique.

Redonda
Island
and the Reefs
As well as the new reefs which are forming around the
island thanks to the magma which has flowed into the
waters over the last 20 years, the waters were already
home to some older reef so a very wide diversity of
marine life can be seen. These are best seen by diving
in the waters between the Island of Montserrat and the
Antiguan island of Redonda located to the northwest.
