Brisbane, Australia “ I’ve been deejaying reggae/dancehall music in Brisbane since 2002.” Phillip “Basmati” Hill shared with Mélange . . . Phil is the presenter/producer of a weekly two-hour Reggae Music Show, The Yard. The show airs on Saturdays, 4:00 to 6:00 pm at 4-6pm on Brisbane Radio Station 4ZZZ FM. 4ZZZFM is a physical radio station but it also has an online presence. The station and show can be streamed directly via the website, via it’s own 4ZZZ app or other apps such as Tune In etc. Also 4ZZZFM has an On Demand facility via the website where the last 6 shows can be re streamed What got you interested in reggae music? In the1980’s, I started listening to artists such as Alpha Blondy, Steel Pulse, Aswad, Black Uhuru and the like. One of the 1st records I bought was Alpha Blondy’s “Apartheid Is Nazism” which a friend introduced to me and it’s still a favourite of mine. After leaving Australia and backpacking around the world, I found myself where reggae music was more mainstream and part of the music culture, versus the rock/pop culture of Australia. Exposure to reggae music in places like the Caribbean coastline of Central America and Brixton in London and attending reggae dances/parties in these places is where I moved to the next level in my reggae music journey, learning more about artists, producers, riddims and Jamaican history. On returning to Brisbane I experienced a bit of culture shock with no places to go for reggae music in Brisbane. So basically I decided to start doing some myself.
