Grenada is known as “ The Isle of Spice ”. The proliferation of nutmeg trees , cinnamon , cloves and other spices scattered throughout the island makes this an apt description . This small island is proudly the second largest exporter of nutmegs in the world , second only to Indonesia , a country over 5,000 times larger than this tiny island . Grenada is indeed the Isle of Spice !

There is no better place to apppreciate that description than the St . George ’ s Market . The most colorful and visited market on the island , its aromatic smells will waft a path to your nostrils long before you locate it . No directions to that scented
region is necessary - the smells will guide you there . Situated in the busy square of the island ’ s capital , St . George , the market is always packed with locals and fascinated tourists . Conveniently located a few blocks away from the cruise terminal and the Esplanade Mall , it is quite easy to walk over to shop for spices , souvenir items and have a quick chat with the friendly vendors . The stalls are a pretty sight - colourful and neatly packed with an array of , yes , you guessed it - spices !
The vendors tables are also loaded with vegetables and fruits . On Saturday mornings , the market is a beautifully frenzied scene with locals busily shopping for produce which lie safely protected
