SPEYSIDE
WATERWHEEL
From 1770 until the early
1900s, sugar production
was the island’s main
aspect of life and today
remains of machinery
from that past age can be
seen all across the island.
The most impressive of
these can be seen near the
village of Speyside on the
northeast tip of the island.
Here there is a large old
iron waterwheel lying in
ruins as testament to the
once thriving industry on
which the islanders once
relied.
