Grenada is known as“ The Isle of Spice”. The proliferation of nutmeg trees, cinnamon, cloves and other spices scattered throughout the island makes this an apt description. This small island is proudly the second largest exporter of nutmegs in the world, second only to Indonesia, a country over 5,000 times larger than this tiny island. Grenada is indeed the Isle of Spice!
There is no better place to apppreciate that description than the St. George’ s Market. The most colorful and visited market on the island, its aromatic smells will waft a path to your nostrils long before you locate it. No directions to that scented
region is necessary- the smells will guide you there. Situated in the busy square of the island’ s capital, St. George, the market is always packed with locals and fascinated tourists. Conveniently located a few blocks away from the cruise terminal and the Esplanade Mall, it is quite easy to walk over to shop for spices, souvenir items and have a quick chat with the friendly vendors. The stalls are a pretty sight- colourful and neatly packed with an array of, yes, you guessed it- spices!
The vendors tables are also loaded with vegetables and fruits. On Saturday mornings, the market is a beautifully frenzied scene with locals busily shopping for produce which lie safely protected
