David Kirsch: Flickr Roam Around St. George Grenada is an island of beautiful contrasts. At any time of year, one can enjoy crystal-clear blue water on its many beaches or on a sailing excursion, while on the other hand, deep within the island’s forests, you can explore waterfalls and trek up hilly terrain to verdant mountain tops. Vacation itineraries can be as diverse as you choose, but you will find authenticity at its very best, as Grenadians are considered to be some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean. On this island, it is safe, fun and family-friendly. One of the things you will most certainly enjoy is an unhurried roam around downtown St. George at the south of the island. The bustling capital is the commercial centre with banks, government offices, shops, churches and the colourful local market, where you will be sure to find cute souvenirs and local spices, after all, Grenada is known as “The Isle of Spice.” Amidst the centre, you can hike up to Fort George or hop onto one of the local colourful minibuses to drive you out of the city to the surrounding communities. The St. George’s Carenage is a picturesque scene, worthy of post-cards. Take a casual stroll on the walkway encasing this natural, horseshoe-shaped body of water and enjoy the serenity it offers. In the offices of the buildings that overlook the Carenage, staff must find calm when they gaze out the windows during stressful days. David Stanley: Flickr That sight is serene as it is beautiful. Although hilly, it is relatively easy to walk around the heart of the city, popping into shops and restaurants during your exploration. Art shops, a chocolate haven, local food, a fort, a museum, a very old but sill-in-use tunnel, a beautiful Esplanade, where cruise ships berth and souvenir shops abound. Lively, friendly people, the scent of spices wafting through the air and beautiful views. Words does not do it justice. You can easily just drive through the heart of the city, but you will have missed a pleasurable experience that you can only have on foot. Grenada is indeed an island of beautiful contrasts. Enjoy it. Explore!
