L
eisha Ross-Williamson,
of Mahagonee Designs
on the Caribbean island
of Grenada, always
had a creative streak. As a
child, arts and craft, designing
and painting were some of
her favourite pastimes. She
remembers drawing comic
strips for her sisters, looking
through books to figure out
how to make her own version
of bedroom slippers and
experimenting with tie-dying.
Her interest in working with
fabric was awakened when
she met Dominican artist
Arnold Toulon. He taught her
how to professionally paint
on fabrics, and the outfits
she subsequently wore soon
became reflective of her innate
love for the arts, which drew
appreciative comments from
the public. Her friends were
thereafter gifted with hand-
painted T-shirts at Christmas,
and frequent enquiries led
her to eventually realize that
there was demand for her work
and, Mahagonee Designs was
therefore born.
Hand-painted fabrics, tie-
dyeing, jewellery creation,
hand-sewn sea shells on T-shirts,
hand-painted bottles – these
are all skillfully crafted by Leisha.
Nature is expressed in every
piece she makes, and no two
are alike – each is original and
unique. Leisha describes her
brand as natural, one-of-a-kind
pieces, specially created to
harmonize with each customer’s
personality. And, for the pieces
she designs ad-hoc, she is
guided by mere spontaneous
creativity. On each occasion,
master pieces result.
