Climb the Steps from
Ladder Bay to the Bottom
Once upon a time on Saba, everything that came ashore had to be hauled from Ladder Bay, up
800 steep steps built into the hillside, to the Customs House at the top. Today, this entry point has
been replaced by the modern Fort Bay Harbour.
Visitors hike the steps now, just for fun, but while on this trek, take a moment to reflect on how
arduous a task it must have been for the people who would have carried necessities for Sabans
daily life up these stairs for many, many years. Now, the gorgeous views can be admired, and at
the bay, there is the opportunity for a pleasant dive and snorkel experience, but “The Ladder”
remains as an important piece of history that speaks to Sabans creativity and determination.
