facts
1. Saba is the smallest special municipality of the
Netherlands.
2. In 1493 the island was sighted by Christopher
Columbus.
3. In 1632 English sailors, shipwrecked, landed on
Saba.
4. In 1640, the Dutch West Indian Company
brought people over to Saba in order to colonize
the island. They were already settled on the
neighbouring island of St. Eustatius. Conflict
between Britain and The Netherlands resulted in
the Dutch being chased off the island by the British
pirate, Henry Morgan.
5. For the next 200 years, the island was controlled
at various times by the Dutch, Spanish, French and
English.
6. In 1816, the Dutch won control and the island
remains a municipality of The Netherlands today.
