Eating Out in Montserrat Although restaurants offer a delectable range of cuisines to suit every palate, for an authentic taste of Montserrat, visitors should seek out the island’s national dish of Goat Stew and other dishes such as Mountain chicken (frogs legs), fish, chicken, saltfish, breadfruit, root vegetables, all cooked with an infusion of local herbs and spices. Goat Stew is the National Dish of Montserrat and is usually made from the meat of a male goat. Its natural gamey taste is further enhanced by the infusion of local seasonings, vegetables and even a dash of rum. The stew is believed to be Irish in origin, with goat meat being substituted in Montserrat for beef used in Irish stew. You won’t necessarily find this special stew on the menu of every restaurant that offers local food, but ask around - locals, the Tourism Office or the Visitor Centre. You’ll be directed to the special places on the island where it can be found. And, when you’ve had your fill of the Goat Stew, try some of the other local food. Bon Apetit.
