Petite Martinique
The small island of less that 1,000 people, located north of Grenada and Carriacou is the third
island that comprises the tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Access
is only by boat.
Whereas a local ferry, The Osprey Express, makes scheduled trips to the island, some people
opt to go there by chartering a yacht or hiring a water taxi. As you approach, you’ll be greeted
by the sight of small, colourful, locally-made boats, bobbing cheerily on the waves, indicative
of the boat-life that exists on the island - almost every home depends on the proceeds of life
at sea.
The tourism industry is very small and accommodations are limited, so most may come here
on a day trip only. One of the fun things to do is to make the trek to the top of the 756 foot hill,
the Piton, which rises gallantly from the island’s centre. A splendid view of the surrounding
Grenadine islands await. Another fun thing is an exploration of the cave at Darant Bay.
