View of Fort Amsterdam The island’s history is punctuated with fights between the Dutch, English, Spanish and French, who all occupied Sint Maarten at various times. Located in Philipsburg between Great Bay and Little Bay, Fort Amsterdam was built by the Dutch in 1631. It lies in ruins today, but a visit to this historic landmark will still provide snapshots of a landmark that once played an important protective role for the colonial powers at the time. It offers some of the most stunning photo opportunities and visitors will appreciate the panoramic views of the island from this location. The Fort has become a nesting ground for pelicans and is now designated an Important Bird Area by Bird Life International. lITTLE baY from Fort Amsterdam This Bay has gentle waves and is a good spot for swimming and snorkeling. It’s sand is clean and powdery-white, inviting many hours of sunbathing bliss. Visitors can indulge in pleasant views of ships in harbour, enjoy water sports or just relax, because although this beach is not too far from the capital, the atmosphere here is relatively quiet and peaceful.
