The Monkeys of St. Kitts
The lush rainforests of St. Kitts is home to Vervent Monkeys, which are believed to have
lived on the Islands of St. Kitts for over 300 years. These green monkeys originated from
West Africa, making its way to this Caribbean island when slaves were brought over to
work on the sugar cane plantations. Highly adaptable, they are certainly not shy and
you will find them roaming freely, helping themselves to tid-bits left lying around and
even stealing a drink or snack from an unsuspecting individual before heading back to
the rainforest to their main meal of leaves and fruit, flowers and insects. They are quite
friendly and entertaining too and will let you hold them without a fuss.
