About her art
It was an inborn thing that came so
natural to me. I was always drawing
and making clothes for my dolls and
myself. I did not know there was a name
for it but noticed pretty soon that not
everyone had it. I was in Kindergarten
when I realized I was kind of special,
because the teachers were always
amazed and showing off my work,
and from then on I won at all the art
competitions.
My art is pretty figurative, I love
painting people, this has always
been my favorite subject. I work with
different media but acrylic is my most
used and oil.
About how she paints
Virginia Tey
I paint in series: In my ‘Childhood Series’
I relive past memories by painting
moments captured in time. The series
will probably never have an ending,
because I love having my inner child
around. My ‘Schizophrenia Series’ are
filled with nostalgia. Here, I deepen the
layers and let the paintings speak about
vulnerability, healing and acceptance.
I just started another series named the
Goddesses, inspired by the power of
the feminine energy. My first Goddess
was probably ‘Virginia’ which is my
favorite painting or paintings because
I have painted her many times. She
became my muse and with each solo
exhibition, I have a new one. Virginia
was an Aruban slave and I am proud of
this work because I was the first artist to
give her a face. Virginia commissioned
me in my dreams and now this lady is
going places, making herself known.
