Cojimar Ernest Hemmingway was inspired by this fishing village east of Havana, and it was the setting for his literary masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea. His boat, “El Pilar” was often docked at the small pier and some of the village elders still recount stories of having seen him walking around the village and interacting with them. A square and monument, positioned in front of the Torreón de Cojímar fort, bears his name. Cojimar is a quiet, unassuming village. You’ll see street musicians, cafes, bars, artists and tourists taking a stroll, memorializing their visit to this historic village with photos. Stop and have lunch at one of the restaurants such as La Terraza. It is said this was one of Hemmingway’s favourites.
