Her local, regional and international performances, to date
I have toured the world as a proud representative of Barbados on tours throughout the Caribbean, Canada, London, Ireland, Scotland, Toronto, Ottawa Jazz Festival, New York, Las Vegas and Portugal. I have also opened for many international acts such as Air Supply, Brian Mc Knight, Peabo Bryson, Macy Gray and Baby face. However, when I am at home in Barbados, being asked by a member of the general public if I still sing, is not uncommon.
My last noted public performances in Barbados were two sold out shows at Frank Collymore Hall City Nights Concert, with Arturo Tappin and Local Jazz songstress CiCi in 2013 and Christmas Jazz Deryck Walcott Productions, an event that offers talented Barbadian musicians scholarships to Berklee School of Music in Boston. Locally, I mainly perform at private functions that usually gives me exposure to international audiences such as the WAFA 12th World Flower Show Gala Dinner this year at the Hilton.
I have performed for International audiences in Canada- Barbados Charity Ball and the Barbados on the Water Festival of Barbadian culture, music, fashion and literature at the Harborfront Center, Toronto. In all my travels to Canada, Blue Mountain / Collingwood Festival, hosted by Frank McNulty will always have a special place in my heart.
More recently in May 2017, I performed in London as part of a group of talent, straight out of the 246 for the Taste of Barbados promotion, facilitated by Cheryl Carter of the BTMI …. that line up included Tamara Marshall, Arturo Tappin, RPB, Biggie Irie and Nikita.
Regionally, I have been given opportunities to travel with the Arturo Tappin Band throughout the Caribbean and have performed at Jazz Artist on the Green in Trinidad with my own ensemble. I welcome the fact that most regional promoters try to facilitate opportunities for visiting musicians to share their knowledge with aspiring talents of their country. In that way I have been able to incorporate my passion for performance as well as my passion for teaching. The Rythms of Spice initiative by Matthias Williams in Grenada this past June, for example, was one such experience. The focus of the event has always been to stimulate musical development on the island and widening the musical taste and appreciation of our people, while giving some assistance to their local Council for the Disabled. It gives me great joy, not only to represent my country but to be part of events with purpose beyond entertainment.
Her favourite thing to do in Barbados
My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family. Specifically eating.... We are foodies so we are always in the kitchen( my 5yr old does a mean spaghetti sauce, my 16yr old is master fryer and my partner’ s skills are off the charts, while I often experiment. My family is grateful if I produce more culinary hits than misses. The true meaning of unconditional love is a clean plate( hit or miss, lol), and a compliment to the chef.
We also love to explore Barbados... we live in paradise and sometimes we just go gallivanting around the island to remind ourselves how beautiful Barbados is and what a privilege it is to live here. Our road trips have become especially profound since the devastation experienced by our neighbors during the recent hurricanes.
One of our favorite things to do is pack a great picnic and visit different beaches along a particular route. We usually end our gallivant at our favorite beach near Port St Charles with a great packed picnic and it’ s all over! There are no“ private“ beaches in Barbados and the beaches that you see in any picture has public access.
