Bonaire’ s Donkey Sanctuary offers shelter to the island’ s donkeys. Its volunteers respond to reports of sick or wounded donkeys and the animals are brought into the Sanctuary and nursed back to health. Orphaned donkeys are also raised there and all donkeys rescued continue to live in the sanctuary and receive care from Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman, the founders of the Sanctuary, and their volunteers.
Visitors are welcomed to tour the Sanctuary by car, scooter, bike or on foot. You can buy carrots from the shop on site to feed the donkeys which will greet you as you tour the park. Before you leave, be sure to purchase a souvenir from the shop. Profits are used to continue caring for the animals.
