Jew’s Alley
PLACES OF INTEREST
This alley across from the cemetery
is thought to have been used by the
Jews to travel between the synagogue,
school and the cemetery.
The Jewish Cemetery
Having been forced to leave Brazil in the 17th century, many Sephardic Jews found their way to
Nevis where they settled and formed one quarter of the island’s population as well-respected sugar
traders and planters. Today, in the Jewish cemetery, nineteen gravestones remain. This site, located on
Government Road, Charlestown is the most visible reminder of the island’s Jewish history.
