Fort Fleur d’Epee This is a small fort located in Grande-Terre, aff ording beautiful expansive views of the island. Built around 1760, its walls, underground tunnels, manicured grounds and art display makes for an interesting visit. Entry is free. PLACES OF INTEREST Fort Delgres Built on a hill overlooking Basse-Terre, Fort Delgres was initially named Fort Saint-Charles. In 1759 the British seized ownership of the island from the French and renamed it Fort Royal. In 1989 its name was changed to Fort Delgres in recognition of the gallant fi ght put up by Louis Delgrès from the fort’s site and who, although losing, is remembered as a hero for the abolition of slavery in the early 19th century.
