Laughingbird Caye National Park
Laughingbird Caye is a fairly rare “faro” or shelf atol which can easily be accessed
by boat from Placencia Village. It is an ideal location for many varieties of sea life
and as a result, attracts many divers. Its name is derived from the many laughing
gulls that once bred on the caye but have since moved on to other cayes due to
disturbance from humans. Due to the diverse marine habitat, abundance of birds,
reptiles and other wildlife on the caye, it was declared a protected area in 1981.
Visitors come here to sightsee, snorkel, scuba dive and picnic.
