There are a lot of things I enjoy on St. Eustatius. Some of these
include looking for “Blue Beads” and artifacts, taking nature walks
and exploring old ruins. I enjoy working with the youth, writing
poetry, plays and acting on stage at cultural and local events, as this
is a great medium to showcase the island through performing art
and expression.
Attending and participating in our local celebrations such as
“Statia Day” is another favourite. This event consists of one week of
entertaining activities showcasing our culture and the re-enactment
of the First Salute to the American flag, Emancipation Day and
celebrating the “Freedom” of our enslaved African ancestors.
Watching live musical performances by our local “Killy Killy” band,
which is the oldest traditional band on the island is also something I
thoroughly enjoy.
Christmas is a wonderful time on St. Eustatius, where families and
friends come together, share with each other, and celebrate the
holidays together. We would stay up late at night baking traditional
goodies, such as Christmas cakes, puddings and black cake, whilst
awaiting the Christmas Carolers.
St. Eustatius is undoubtedly the best place to be.
