Madame Jeanette is Stacey’s recent collection of handmade
jewelry that combines a fusion of hand-crafted paper beads,
ceramic beads, coconut beads, wooden beads, lava rock
beads, flamboyant tree seeds and antique glass beads from
Senegal and Goree Island.
These materials, deriving from various sources are indicative
of the island’s rich culture and heritage. Inspired by her
grandmother and the Madame Jeannette peppers that she
often used in her cooking, this spicy mélange of textures
and forms represents Saba and the women who have
gained strength, grace and wisdom along their journey.
“
My Saba is a place where the
light and colors are magic to your
senses. There is so much joy in
simply watching how light changes
throughout the day, and what new
surprises of color I’ll find on my
drive to work – the newly painted
alizarin crimson of that roof on the
intersection of St. John’s against the
perfectly serene Caribbean water,
moving in hues of cobalt until it
fades into softness on the horizon.
The roadside is always dotted
with an array of wildflowers – my
inspiration for the day.
To a a visitor, I recommend watching
a Well’s bay sunset or taking an early
morning hike to the tide pools where
you can experience the intricate
patterns on the volcanic rocks which
were created when lava reacted
with the water at the shoreline. If
you’re lucky, you might even get to
see turtles surface below the cliffs.
I recommend you explore above
and under water, but just remember
to stop and take in the serenity,
intricacies and unique gifts that
Saba has to offer.
