Isla Saona

Located to the south of the mainland , the picture-perfect beaches of this 42-square mile island attract more visitors than all the country ’ s other national parks combined . Hotel construction is not permitted on the island , but tourists can take day trips to enjoy the beaches . Getting there by speedboat , catamaran , or motorboat passing by spectacular coastal scenery is half of the fun . Most trips leave from the Bayahibe town boat launch area . On the way , boats may stop at Palmilla beach , a very shallow area , or at the Catalinita sand bank .
