Fort Beekenburg

Built in 1703 , this fort is now in ruins but is still worth visiting as it is an important part of this island ’ s history . The Dutch were constantly having to defend the island against the English and French so this fort was strategically placed to ensure that approaching enemies were not able to reach Willemstad . Today , just a dim shadow of days gone by remain atop this hill . Overlooking the sea , the aged castle that once saw frantic activity , as foreign forces , even pirates attempted to capture and pillage , now sit unmanned , with centuriesold cannon its only company . Proud ruins , nevertheless . Many don ’ t visit , but if you do , you will enjoy the stillness and of course , the spectacular view .
