The Editor says . . .
Every Caribbean island can boast of beautiful beaches, friendly people and engaging history.
The entire region offers some of the best vacations in world and we have yet to meet a visitor
who has vowed never to return. In as much as the islands are similar in many ways, they each
have their own unique qualities and individual appeal.
Our cover story for this issue, where the words serenity and charm actually do apply, is the
exquisite island of St. Eustatius or Statia, as it is lovingly called. It is a tiny island of 21 square
kilometers, located close to Saba, St. Kitts and the Virgin Islands. It was once the busiest
seaport in the world and an important asset to the Dutch Government. Today, this special
municipality of The Netherlands has become a sleepy little island of less than 5,000 people.
Its small size and population translates into a very friendly atmosphere, where visitors are
immediately embraced and made to feel welcome. We invite you to plan a visit to Statia. You’ll
be enamored by its beauty, marine life, landscape and people. A fascinating history lesson also
awaits.
Happy Reading.
