Vaughn Anslyn shared with Mélange
I was born and raised on the island of Nevis. I was an adventurous child always getting into trouble, loved exploring, very physical and loved the ocean. I always looked at the world differently, deeper, beyond the surface, so you can imagine on a small Caribbean island such as this I was looked at as being a bit strange, out of place. I dressed my own way, spoke with my own accent and really didn’ t conform to what was perceived as“ normal”. Art was my escape.
About your Creativity
Creativity has been a passion of mine as far back as I can remember. In school I would draw everyone’ s homework projects and often in class would be scolded by the teacher for not paying attention. Instead I would be drawing what I saw outside and sometimes even the teacher.
About what drives you
Through my journey I have I have always included art in EVERY aspect of my life. I have never been formally trained in art and have never attended an art school or taken art classes. I would simply practice, a lot. It took me five years untill I finally got my portraits to where I would actually show someone and even then, I still challenge myself to go darker, more detail, more expression. I have been blessed with a talent that goes beyond my own comprehension. I do things that people seem to think as incredible yet I accomplish them with no effort, doing things right the first time like I have been doing it for years.
About your different types of art
I don’ t allow myself to be confined, no borders, no boundaries. I live my life that way and I apply it to my work. I have no defined medium. ART IS MY MEDIUM. I have done oil, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, sidewalk chalk art, bodypainting, canvas, murals, carpentry architectural plans, signs, vehicle graphics, set design, acting( Young and the Restless 1996) runway modelling, fashion designer, tattoo, sand sculpture, yoga instructor, fitness trainer even exotic dancer. All these things make me ME yet though it all I am never complacent. I always want to do more, be more. I don’ t compete with others nor do I compare myself and my work, instead I compete with Vaughn I strive to be better than he was yesterday and no matter how great I am told I am I don’ t buy into it, I always challenge myself further.
