PLACES OF INTEREST
Montserrat is the site of a modern day Pompeii after its volcano, one of the many Soufrière Hills (French:
“sulphur outlet”) volcanoes in the Caribbean erupted in 1995. As the eruption caused two thirds of the island
inhabitants to flee and buried the island’s former capital, Plymouth, it is little wonder that today it provides
visitors to the island with some of the most interesting places to witness.
Soufrière Hills
Volcano
Even today the volcano
is considered to be active
with the last minor eruption
occurring in 2010 and so
viewing this volcano from
any vantage point is a must
see for many tourists. As
the volcano is still active,
current activities include
growth of lava domes,
dome collapses, volcanic
gas emissions, pyroclastic
flows and ash venting.
