Cemetery of
Morne-à-l’eau
This is a cemetery, on
a hill. Black and white
checkerboard tombs
arranged in the shape of
an amphitheatre adorn
the hillside in the town
of Morne-à-l’eau on the
island of Grande-Terre.
Eye-catching and unique,
it is one of the most visited
cemeteries in Guadeloupe.
On the night of All Saints in
November, candles are lit on
the graves as is customary in
most Caribbean islands, but
here at Morne-à-l’eau, it is an
exceptionally petty sight.
