In Canada , 3D printed homes are being built by Habitat for Humanity in collaboration with the University of Windsor and other community partners . In April , construction started on a four-unit structure in Ontario . According to Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex , the homes are the first multi-unit 3D printed residences in North America .
Fiona Coughlin , CEO of Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex notes , “ To me partnership is really the key to addressing any kind of housing crisis or any kind of social crisis . There is no one solution for everything and if we ’ re all working separately , we ’ re not going to be able to move the needle on housing . So we need to bring all of the technology , all of the knowledge , all of the experiences of all of these great organizations together in projects like this so that we can actually address the housing crisis in a meaningful way .“
Habitat for Humanity prides itself on sustainability and durability in the construction of homes . The non-profit is also on a mission to keep waste out of landfills . The first Habitat
Restore opened in Canada in 1991 . Restores resell gently used items like cabinets , appliances , building supplies and furniture that have been donated . Profits are used to rehabilitate , repair and build more Habitat homes . Since the first Restore opened more than 30 years ago , the organization has added more than 1,000 locations in six countries . In 2015 alone , more than 124,000 tons of donated items ended up in Restores and not in landfills . And in 2020 , the Habitat Philadelphia Restore made enough money to repair 14 homes belonging to senior citizens and veterans .
With continued support from volunteers , partner programs and donations , Habitat for Humanity will be able to grow its mission to protect the environment and provide safe and affordable housing to future families .
