The Maldivian culture : unique , rich and varied . by Marina Apperley

Although home to over half a million people , the Maldives ’ culture is unique , rich and varied , and heavily influenced by the various cultures of those who have settled on the island nation throughout the years . Alongside this influence , their culture , craft and traditions have been shaped by the island environment and the seas which surround it .

Dhivehi is the official language of its people . It is of Indo-Iranian Sanskritic origin and borrows from all the influences and cultures of the Maldives . Likewise , their current script , Thaana , is just as unique and originated from Arabic numerals of the 16th century . Although the Maldives was historically a Buddhist country , in 1152 AD , they evolved as an Islamic nation following the arrival of the first Koran . Today , religion remains an integral part of life on the islands , with much of their culture based on Islamic Sharia law . Islam is the official and only allowed religion in the island nation .
Maldivians are hospitable and friendly people with a casual and relaxed lifestyle attached to the sea . Traditionally , their island communities were very close-knit , and this togetherness prevails today . Roles still follow near tradition as well with men seen to be the breadwinners of the family engaging in tourism related roles , fishing , carpentry and toddy tapping . Women mainly engage in household duties and raising families . However , modern influences and economic growth have introduced some dramatic lifestyle changes over the years and seen an increase in women working within the tourism industry and holding crucial positions within the public and private sectors .
Both music and dance also form an integral part of the island nation ’ s culture . As with nearly all other areas , these are heavily influenced by North Indian styles . Bollywood movies and music and old Hindi songs are popular amongst many people . Traditional dances also find inspiration from the Northern Indian classical dance form of Kathak . Additionally , many enjoy the famous style of the Bodu Beru , a music and dance performance incorporating the beat of drums with movement believed to be inspired by African travelers .
Maldivians are expert craftsmen with a deep and proud tradition of handicrafts : lacquered wooden ornaments , finely woven reed mats , coral carvings , intricate textile production and fabric painting , as well as blacksmith , goldsmith and silversmith products . Their beauty and intricate designs are visible throughout the Maldives and can be seen in the construction of mosques , tombstones , basketry and the weave of the Maldivian dress , to name a few . Product creation is through traditional processes , incorporating nature , time , skill and patience . It is believed each of these handicraft skills are confined to certain geographic regions , atolls or islands . For example , The Island of Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll is renowned for its fine hand-woven mats made of dried hau ( rushes ) used for prayer mats and decoration . Similarly , the finest lacquer work can be found on Thulhaadhoo Island , in Baa Atoll . Their incredible skills are passed down through generations and production is exercised heavily
