Throughout the United States , a person who has a disability is allowed to remain in the school system until they are 21 years old . Mark Cronin said that the immediate years following are considered the “ 21-year-old cliff .” In turn , a large number of people with disabilities attempt to figure out the next steps of their lives , often facing growing frustration . With only 1 in 5 people with disabilities employed across the US , work often presents a challenge due to the lack of options and inclusivity .
