PALM WINE

By: Amiya Bains

Found anywhere from marriage and birth celebrations to funeral wakes, palm wine, known as “Emu” in Nigeria, is deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of the Yoruba people.

Palm wine is created by tapping

sap from a palm tree and then putting

it through the fermentation process.

The white beverage has a sweet

taste, and a 4% alcohol content.

Many believe in its health benefits,

ranging from helping preserve

vision to slowing down the process

of aging and preventing cancer, and it

is very possible that their belief in

the drink is well-placed. It is a good source of amino acids, potassium, zinc, iron and vitamin B. Studies also show that, when consumed in moderate amounts, palm wine lessens chances of cardiovascular diseases.

Traditionally, palm wine is often poured out as an offering to a deity, or spilled on the ground to show respect for ancestors. It is also served at various celebrations to guests.
