Is the hotel really haunted?

The Hotel has a long reputation of being haunted! However, this reputation became much stronger after the novelist Stephen King spend one night in room 217, which acquired a huge reputation for being the most haunted hotel room, or at least the best known by guests. As in other old buildings, guests can hear creaking stairs, noises in the windows and doors, causing even more fear, because of the frequent feeling of being in a horror movie.

The haunted stories are not so related to the Hotel's past, but to the huge number of guests reporting stories about lights turning on and off, doors opening and closing, laughter, footsteps, shadows, drafts and unexplainable chills. Longtime staff can attest to at least four spirits that regularly roam the hotel’s corridors, halls and rooms: Lucy, Paul, Eddie, and Elizabeth.

Because of all these paranormal activities, some still unexplained, the Stanley Hotel is known as one of America's most haunted places. The Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures and Syfy’s Ghost Hunters are just two of many teams to investigate the occurrences.

Truth or not, ghost tours were created at the Hotel and hired paranormal guides telling stories of souls wandering around, as well as making monthly ghost hunts. The hotel shop sells souvenirs linked to the movie "The Shining". They offer consultations with a psychic, Madame Vera, and there's a labyrinth that mimics the same that appears in the movie.
